Bosphorus – the start of the Silk Road

So, another step towards completing the preparation for the actual cycling event is now underway…

After deciding on the destination, mapping out the route through from Istanbul, Turkey, south towards Damascus in Syria, and a myriad other details, including spending the least possible amount of funds on the pre-visit as possible, but doing a thoroughly efficient job of it, the time has come for the Betfair Lifecycle Challenge 2009 Logistics Team, made up of three components, Mario, Gilbert and Soner, to set off on their way to wrap up last-minute hurdles, such as appropriate roads and accommodation.

With trusty GPS in hand, (an amazingly useful little gadget to have on such a trip!), and Soner, the Turkish interpreter and member of the Lifecycle Team, on board to guide them through any pitfalls while on their travels, the crew start their first day in Istanbul, city of the majestic Bosphorus Bridge.

Having checked out roads, traffic, hills and so on, through to the outskirts of the city, the three finally settle their tired bones at the pre-booked accommodation and discuss the day’s work, commenting on the Arabic style of life, keeping everyone’s well-being at heart, mostly that of the cyclists who have volunteered for this challenge, and, of course, that of the patients at the Mater Dei Renal Unit!

The second day sees them on to Kandira and Safranbul, whilst the third takes them on to Avanos, taking note of checkpoints every 40 kms and finishing points, preferrably close to accommodation at the end of each day, along their way,

Most discussed was the fact that the Governor of Istanbul has promised a police escort while crossing the Bosphorus Bridge. So far this had been deemed an impossible dream by all concerned! Special thanks go to the Maltese Consul in Istanbul, Mr Simon Pullicino, who gave full support throughout the meeting to negotiate the crossing, held last Sunday at Mr Pullicino’s offices in the Turkish capital.

Enjoy feasting your eyes folks, this is where East meets West!!
