Day 3 – Zonguldak to Safranbolu
Updated This ride was shorter and, after a short stretch along the Black Sea coast, took the Betfair Lifecycle Challenge south through the Karabük Province. The Turkish police escorted the team out of Zonguldak, and the total distance today was approximately 110km, including a few tough hills and some unlit tunnels. Today’s ride was tougher than day 1, and the cyclists rode 187km in hot, dry weather, including some challenging hills with gradients up to 17%. Adding to the difficulties was a headwind along the coast which made even flat stretches harder. The route was amongst mountains and breathtaking views though the cyclists were out ofEnd of Day 1 – A Good Start
The 2009 Betfair Lifecycle Challenge started in earnest today, on time, with a police escort through Istanbul. Simon Pullicino, the Consul General for Malta in Istanbul, witnessed the start of the event. The team crossed the Bosphorus in slightly damp, grey conditions, but in high spirits, and 27.5km later the first checkpoint was cleared atIstanbul Preparations Complete
Following the early arrival in Istanbul of members of the Betfair Lifecycle Challenge backup team, the container of equipment and personal effects has been unloaded onto the truck that will be following the challenge through Turkey and Syria.
