]]> Betfair, and we are all hopeful that the excellent working relationship built between LifeCycle and Betfair will continue for the 2010 challenge. No details about the 2010 challenge route can be released just yet, though we can say that the number of possible routes has been narrowed to two, and the challenge will also include some new features to really test the cyclists’ mettle. Back to 2009, and while final donations are still being received, we are delighted to announce that donations and sponsorship this year have raised in the region of €110,000, an amazing achievement in the current economic climate. After deducting the costs of running the event, this means around €70,000 will help directly to support the treatment of patients with renal disease and awareness of our cause, which will in turn attract more sponsors in future. Our accounts will shortly go to the auditors, and we will announce the final figure in due course. We would like to thank our title sponsor, Betfair, all our sponsors and the general public for their continuing support. ]]> Updated The last day of the 2009 Betfair Lifecycle Challenge has finally arrived, and today the cyclists are riding the final 155km from Homs southwards to Damscus, over relatively flat terrain and on good roads. The weather is clear and sunny with temperatures up to 38 degrees celsius and low humidity. Cyclists and backup team members alike are excited about reaching the final destination after working so hard both before and during the challenge, and spirits are understandably high. The team is expected to reach the finishing line in the old city of Damascus at around 18:00 Syria time (17:00 Malta time).

Update at 15:30 Malta time

The challenge now has Damascus in its sights, in fact the first few cyclists have already arrived and can take pride in their achievement. They can also enjoy some well-earned rest and shade after a very hot day’s cycling. There was unfortunately another casualty today due to medical problems, but overall everyone is really excited to make it to the end of this year’s Betfair Lifecycle Challenge.
