After the hour and a half screening the certificates were awarded to all the team. Marcel Saliba was presented with a specially designed shirt for each of the 2 time trial victories on the “Cliff Micallef memorial hill climb challenge” over the St Gotthard Pass and the “Speed time trial” in Belguim. This year’s “Jack Bowen” Award was presented to Robert Zammit who the committee felt epitomised the spirit of LifeCycle. Well done to all as each and every one of you was a credit to this organisation.

After being escorted the last 10km by members of Stockport Fire Brigade (on their bikes), this afternoon the 2010 Betfair LifeCycle Challenge team rode proudly up to the Old Trafford stadium and were met by Sir Alex Ferguson, manager of Manchester United Football Club.
Several family members of the Maltese cyclists were also there to give a huge Maltese welcome, making it a noisy and emotional scene. Sir Alex spent 15 to 20 minutes signing shirts and autographs and expressed amazement at the cyclists covering such a great distance over such a short time.
LifeCycle chairman Alan Curry said it was one of the most glamorous finishes possible, and with many football fans in the team it gave added inspiration to the cyclists to finish. He also stated that the group as a whole were a credit to Malta for what they had done for persons less fortunate than themselves.
Tomorrow many of the team have tickets for the Manchester United vs Westham game in Old Trafford, thanks to the efforts of Betfair and the Manchester United Supporters Club in Malta. For those who aren’t football fans tomorrow will simply be an opportunity to rest, recharge and perhaps do some shopping, and then the whole team will get together for a celebratory meal at Old Trafford in the evening.
On Sunday (29th August), the challenge team will be arriving back in Malta on flight KM139 from Manchester, due in at 14:50. They would love to see friends, family and supporters when they come through the doors into the arrivals hall, so get there if you can!

Over the last two days, England has thrown the “best” of its summer weather (i.e. rain, wind and cold) at the team, and this has inevitably taken a toll on morale. There have also been many small mechanical problems, which is to be expected when putting even professional standard bikes through ten solid days of extreme punishment. Energy levels are low, and it is only the knowledge that the end is so close that is keeping everyone going.
Day 10, from Dunkerque to South Ockenden (near Thurrock), involved two water crossings. The first was of course the English Channel and the team made the crossing on an early morning Norfolk Line ferry. The second, after riding through the usually beautiful Kent countryside in freezing rain, involved shuttling the cyclists through the Dartford Tunnel in minivans while the bikes were taken through on the trucks.
Day 11 was another extra-long day with a 5am start – approximately 244km from South Ockenden to the centre of Loughborough in Leicestershire, where the challenge bedded down for the night in a secondary school.

Yesterday morning cyclists mounted their bicycles for the short (130km) journey to Baden Baden from their accommodation in Willingen and had to face climbs of up to 20%. The kitchen staff had to make very quick progress due to the short distance, as they have to prepare a good warm meal for the cyclists in time for their arrival, apart from preparing food, snacks and packed lunches for the following day. Not an easy task to feed 72 persons everyday with basic and mobile cooking utilities.
Today, the route was enjoyable but tiring and most cyclists said it was the hardest day of all, which is understandable considering that tiredness has started to rear its ugly head. Also, there are a number of cyclists suffering from saddle sores while others are complaining of muscle and joint pains, keeping the medical team busy. Not to mention that today’s ride included a flat time trial through country lanes and tracks.
Yesterday at Baden Baden and today at Turkismuhle, the team were met by local press who plan to cover the event in some detail, and tonight the Mayor of the Norhfelden region came to the accommodation and socialised with the team.
Tomorrow the challenge crosses from Germany into Luxembourg.
