On Tuesday 3rd April 2012, LifeCycle Organisation launched the upcoming challenge for 2012. The Betfair LifeCycle Challenge will venture not only outside Europe but to a new continent – Australia. This will attract a number of cyclists and is auguring to be another success attracting a number of cyclists of all levels. Alan Curry, founder member and chairman of the committee, gave a brief account of the amount of money collected and the use the donations were put to. Last year nearly €120,000 were collected from a number of companies and individuals and is being spent on the purchase of specialist equipment, a CRRT machine for use by renal patients. With these funds LifeCycle has initiated work towards community care for renal patients and engaged a top dietitian on a part-time basis so as to help renal patients get a better grasp of how to manage their daily diets. LifeCycle Organisation mission statement is to help renal patients have a better quality of life and once more this past year they have organized a number of outings and a trip to Lourdes. Due to their medical condition, patients are accompanied by nursing staff that are vital to assist the patients whilst abroad. Mr Curry also described the route which would take Betfair LifeCycle Challenge from Brisbane to Melbourne, nearly a 2000km route in 11days. This year it is expected that the challenge would attract a number of cyclists as Australia is like a second home to many Maltese due to relatives living there. The sponsorships collected will go to acquiring a Plasma electroforated Machine for renal patients. LifeCycle Organisation is also discussing two issues with the Renal Unit. One is the possible setting up of a unit within the Hospice movement to help renal patients and the other is to help living kidney donors with any financial hardship they may face. This will be done under consultation with Prof Rev E Agius who also gave a short presentation about the topic during the launch. Mr Antoine Bonello spoke on behalf of Betfair and said
“We are delighted to announce our fourth year of sponsorship for the Lifecycle Challenge. Last year we helped raise valuable money for the renal patients of Malta and this year we hope to raise even more with the exciting news that we are due to go Australia. I know that all the staff at Betfair are looking forward to getting involved and raising as much money as possible.”
Mr Anthony Bugeja, another founder member of LifeCycle Organisation, explained the hardships Renal patients experienced and how important the work of LifeCycle organization is to the renal patients. LifeCycle will also be working on the setting up of a research grant to help scholars in carrying out further research on renal failure and related issues. Applications are open and will be received at ChicPhysique Studio, 1 Alfred Craig Street, Pieta on Mondays from 16.30 – 18.00 and on Saturday mornings from 10.30 – 12.30. If you would like to help our cause please donate by sms on 5061 7370 (€2.33), 5061 8920 (€6.99), 5061 9229 (€11.65), or on Landlines 5160 2020 (€10), 5170 2005 (€15), 51802006 (€25). ]]>
